Medical air plant
The operating principle of a Medical Air Plant is as follows: The ambient air is drawn in by compressors and compressed to about 10 bar pressure, and then stored in an air tank at this pressure. The compressed air from the tank is passed through a pre-filter to remove any particles and moisture, and then to a dryer where the moisture is removed chemically. The dried air is then passed through a filter bank to remove any oil, moisture, particles, dust, and other contaminants to meet the required air quality limits for medical air. The cleaned air, at a pressure of 7-9.5 bar, is then regulated to 4 or 7 bar pressure, or both, according to the usage needs, and supplied to the hospital's air network.
Components of Medical Air Plant: 1-) Medical Compressors 2-) Dryer 3-) Electrical Control Panel 4-) 4-7 Bar Regulation Group 5-) Bacteria Filter Group for breathable air 6-) Pressurized Air Tank 7-) Inter-unit connection elements.
Medical Air Compressor
Medical air compressors are used to provide compressed air for hospitals. These compressors, which take in the desired clean air, send the compressed air to the air tanks.
Compressors are generally oil-lubricated or oil-free piston type. Their capacities range from 2.1 l/s to 31.7 l/s. The power ratio is between 1.5 kW and 15 kW and they are available with or without a muffler.
In addition to these, there are also high-capacity oil-injected screw compressors for use in hospitals. Their capacity ranges from 8 l/s to 222 l/s. The power ratio ranges from 7.5 kW to 75 kW.
Chemical Type Dryer
The chemical type dryer is a device that removes moisture from compressed air produced by the compressor and prevents other particles from entering the system. The dryer operates chemically, not electrically, with electricity only required for the operation of motorized valves. The dryer cylinder contains an active moisture-absorbing chemical substance that works based on a regeneration system. About 10-15% of the dried air is used to dry the active moisture-absorbing chemical substance in the regeneration column. The dryer comes in different capacities ranging from 50-200 m3/h and is available in duplex and simplex models depending on the capacity of the system.
The Bacteria Filter Group
While meeting the compressed air demand, dryers and filters are responsible for protecting the compressed air system and other components against contamination. Along with 140 million types of pollutants, polluted air in industrial areas poses a threat to compressed air systems. Compression systems accumulate all these impurities, along with condensed liquid, in the pipeline system, becoming an abrasive mixture. Tools and devices can become inoperable, the air taken can be contaminated, and the filtered air can be breathed by the patient.
The 4-7 Bar Regulation Group
The dried air reaches the regulation group and reaches the required pressure level. It is sent to the desired locations at 4 bar and 7 bar. 4 bar air is used for some medical devices and in intensive care units. 7 bar air is used in some surgical instruments and to operate certain types of pendants.
Compressed Air Tank
Compressed air tanks are made of steel and typically have a circumference of 6mm and a convex portion of 8mm. The maximum pressure the tank can withstand is 18 atm, while the working pressure is max. 10 atm. The device is produced according to BS 5169 standards and tested according to the procedures specified in the standards. Tank capacities range from 300 to 3000 liters. The tank capacity should be half the output capacity of the plant calculated according to HTM 2022 standards in liters per minute.

Medical gas pipelines ensure the safe, hygienic, and efficient distribution of oxygen, vacuum, anesthetic gases, and other medical gases to patients and other equipment in healthcare facilities. Medical gas cylinders are not suitable for meeting the needs of a built-in healthcare facility, as they limit mobility and require a large storage area. Medical gas pipelines simplify facility management by providing centralized gas distribution throughout the facility and also enable quick intervention during emergencies. Medical gas pipelines are considered an important element for healthcare facilities to function effectively.
Medical gas systems eliminate the costs associated with the use of medical gas cylinders by providing centralized distribution of gases from a single source in healthcare facilities. These systems also eliminate problems related to cylinder transport, storage, and management. Medical gas systems also eliminate the need for facility staff to deal with the storage, transport, and replacement of cylinders, allowing them to focus on other important tasks and save time. In addition, safety issues and mobility limitations related to the use and management of medical gas cylinders are eliminated. Therefore, medical gas systems reduce the costs of healthcare facilities, allow staff to use their time more efficiently, and make business processes more effective.
